Five years in beta mode hasn't prevented Google's Web-based Gmail from flourishing. In fact, it's one of the few e-mail products continuing to innovate in any way these days. Desktop clients like Outlook and Thunderbird haven't changed much in years; Hotmail gets a new name every few months, but that's about it. Gmail, via experiments from the Gmail Labs team, is constantly adding new features. Plus, Gmail is simple to use. At least on the surface. (more)

A Nielsen Online report shows that despite social networking site Twitter's meteoric rise in popularity, the site is having trouble retaining its community of Twitterers. Data released from Nielsen Online, which analyzes online media and its audiences, shows the popular social networking site Twitter is struggling with low retention rates: More than 60 percent of Twitter users fail to return the following month. US President Barack Obama has announced his "vision for high-speed rail" in the country, which would create jobs, ease congestion and save energy. He said the US could not afford not to make the investment in 10 routes. Six of the routes already approved, including California and Florida, could get some of the $8 billion (£5.4bn) earmarked for rail improvements. (more)

One of the features that set Chrome apart from rivals on its debut, the array of Web page thumbnails that greeted users when they launched the browser or opened a new browsing tab, is becoming optional. In the Chrome 2.0.174.0 update Google released Thursday to those signed up for the raw software available through the preview channel, the browser now includes the "ability to remove thumbnails from the New Tab Page," said Google Chrome Program Manager Anthony Laforge in a blog post.
