Signs of the times | Event Marketer Magazine

Sunday, September 13, 2009 6:29:38 AM GMT
In this new era of thrift, marketers are scouting out off-the-beaten-path venues, like unsold homes and local cafés, where they can throw their events and skip the expense associated with custom-built environments. An added bonus with these unconventional spaces is that the target demo often comes with the package. From April 2 to 5, lifestyle brands like Lancôme and Nespresso were two of 22 brands participating in the Retail Therapy pop-up event, handled by New York City-based agency Grace Group/Pop-up Tar... Top News - Twitter unused by most faculty, study says

posted by DonDeaDonDea 179 days, 18 hours, 9 minutes ago
Sunday, September 13, 2009 6:29:00 AM GMT
Three in ten college faculty surveyed earlier this summer said they use the micro-blogging site Twitter as an educational tool, but many educators remain skeptical of the social network and believe the site contributes to poor writing habits and will prove to be a "fad." Faculty Focus, a company that distributes electronic newsletters to higher-education professionals, surveyed about 2,000 college and university faculty this summer and found that 69.3 percent of respondents don't use Twitter in any capacity... Mr. CLAY SHIRKY: Thank you, Scott. Thank you for having me. SIMON: We certainly saw social media active in the presidential campaign last year… Mr. SHIRKY: Yes. SIMON: …to say the least. What's happening at the municipal level now? Mr. SHIRKY: Well, municipalities are a really interesting example of these kinds of technologies in use, because municipalities are smaller, they're socially more dense, neighborhoods have a neighborhood feel. And so we're seeing groups of citizens organize themselves in cities t... (more)

How it Works Under the hood, Eqentia does "content harvesting" from social media sites such as Twitter, blogs and more. Currently Eqentia is getting content from over 13,000 feeds, collecting an estimated 65,000 articles daily. Eqentia told us that it's indexed 20 million articles so far. The largest topic currently is Outsourcing, with 90,000 articles. Other topics include: Cloud Computing: 60,000; Supply Chain Management: 40,000; Twitter: 20,000; Social Media: 11,000. Top 5 Web Trends of 2009: Structured Data

Friday, September 11, 2009 1:12:11 AM GMT Tuesday, September 08, 2009 6:16:00 AM GMT
Web of Data, Not Documents Tim Berners-Lee said in February this year that we're now in a Web of Data, rather than a Web of Documents. The organization that Berners-Lee heads, the W3C, has heavily promoted two key initiatives that are helping to build this Web of Data: the Semantic Web and more recently Linked Data. However over the past few years, we've seen that there are many other ways to structure dataand enable others to build off it. The best current example is surely Twitter, whose API has historica... Should Your Organization "Go Google"? -

Friday, September 11, 2009 1:12:11 AM GMT Monday, September 07, 2009 7:19:48 AM GMT
This month Google's running a billboard ad campaign (the only kind they do) in Boston, Chicago, New York and San Francisco encouraging businesses to switch to Google Apps from Lotus Notes or Microsoft Exchange. They call the transition "going Google" and even offer a convincing calculatorwhich shows you how much money your organization can save by outsourcing your IT needs to Google. Consider these impressive numbers pitting Google Apps Premier subscriptions (at $50 per user) against Microsoft Exchange 2007... (more)

The Pros and Cons of Co-Branding

Co-branding is nothing new, and it's something that we as consumers take somewhat for granted. Visit a grocery store and you'll see dozens of examples, from the ice cream aisle (Breyer's (UL) and Hershey (HSY)) to the snack aisle (Lay's (PEP) and KC Masterpiece (CLX)) to the cereal aisle (Kellogg's (K) and Healthy Choice) to the dessert aisle (Cinnabon and Mrs. Smith's). You can also find co-branding examples in the automotive world (Coach (COH) and Lexus (TM)), the hospitality industry (Bulgari and Ritz-Ca... (more)

Over the past three years, we have tracked the rising adoption of Web 2.0 technologies, as well as the ways organizations are using them. This year, we sought to get a clear idea of whether companies are deriving measurable business benefits from their investments in the Web. Our findings indicate that they are. Nearly 1,700 executives from around the world, across a range of industries and functional areas, responded to this year's survey. We asked them about the value they have realized from their Web 2.0... (more)

When invited to participate in the NSF/JISC Repositories Workshop in April 2007 (http://www.sis.pitt.edu/~repwkshop/), I was tasked to consider if "data-driven science is becoming a new scientific paradigm — ranking with theory, experimentation, and computational science." I considered the question carefully. Ultimately, I arrived at the old adage concerning the difference between ignorance and apathy: I don't know and I don't care. Data-driven science may in fact be a legitimate, new, fourth scientific pa... (more)

As the national unemployment rate nears 10 percent, many Americans are doing something they had never imagined they would do: negotiate a severance package. It's a formidable task, more so now that employers, battered by the economic downturn, are offering smaller payouts when they let go of employees. Therefore, experts suggest doing research and soul-searching before walking into negotiations: Figure out what others have received and what you'd like to get. "There's a lot at stake here, and you really c... (more)

The workforce is aging fast, and stakeholders — companies, governments, and others — have a narrow window of time to adapt. So says the World Economic Forum, which Wednesday issued an 80-page report outlining strategic options to address how stakeholders can strengthen financial sustainability, quality of retirement, and health-care provisioning in a rapidly aging world. The report emphasizes that companies and governments must work cooperatively for meaningful action to occur — a dubious scenario in today... (more)

Why We Need Narcissistic Leaders

In turbulent times like the present, we need visionary leaders in government and business. These are the political leaders who will take big risks to make a better, more productive society, and the entrepreneurs who will latch on to the game-changing technologies that produce innovations like low-cost clean energy. But as Barack Obama is discovering, turbulent times make people anxious. Unsure and worried about the future, they want leaders who make them feel secure and reassure them about the future, and n... Naomi Eisenberger, a leading social neuroscience researcher at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), wanted to understand what goes on in the brain when people feel rejected by others. She designed an experiment in which volunteers played a computer game called Cyberball while having their brains scanned by a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine. Cyberball hearkens back to the nastiness of the school playground. “People thought they were playing a ball-tossing game over the Int... (more)

It has become a cliché that first-time visitors to Twitter respond with some version of: “I don’t get it.” On Tuesday night, Twitter unveiled a brand-new home page that tries to solve that problem — and makes Twitter look a lot more like a real-time search engine. The main feature on the new home page is a big search box under the suggestion “See what people are saying about…” People can type a word or phrase into the box and see the latest relevant tweets. This is a big change for Twitter and makes it more... (more)

Free today? Not for long Disney plans to experiment with a paid-subscription model online, Robert Iger said, at a conference sponsored by Fortune magazine. The Disney CEO added that people are willing to pay for quality content if they perceive it has value, MediaBuyerPlanner reports. A subscription model will give Disney better knowledge of customers, as their activities and interests can be tracked. That, in turn, will lead to the ability to charge marketers higher prices, he observed, writes Bloomberg.... (more)

Measuring the Value of Online Fan Communities | What's a fan worth?

The first step is to create a strategy that dovetails with existing marketing plans and messaging. A company wants to be where its audience is living online, and that will often mean social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn, and services like Twitter. Social media also means a corporate blog: If a firm does not have one, it is already behind the times. For organizations, social media can serve as a private media channel that allows corporate control of the messaging. Social networks provide an ... (more)
