Big Pharma and Google Sidewiki: A Sink or Swim Situation? How it Affects Marketers and What You Can Do About It For many companies, dipping their toes into the social-media water is reminiscent of the backyard pool in late spring. The cold water stings your feet. You hang out on the first step for a few minutes until you get used to the cold. Another step and that sting is back, but you're on your way ... (more)

AdAge reports that Microsoft has budgeted up to $100 million to advertise Bing, its yet-unlaunched search engine, on TV, on radio, online and in print. The Bing campaign is so big that ad agency JWT has hired additional creative staff, according to AdAge. Getting customers to switch from Google will be tough. Internal Google tests found that most users favored results branded with the Google logo, even when Google swapped logos with another search engine to serve supposedly inferior results under its own b... Google vs. the Real-Time Web

published 289 days, 13 hours, 59 minutes ago posted by DonDeaDonDea 291 days, 6 hours, 5 minutes ago

Simply put, it’s the difference between discovery and search, between the “Now Web” and the “Then Web.” Here’s a more specific analogy: In college, most of us spent a lot of time in the library but also in a social hub like the campus coffee shop. One was a place for digging up information, the other a more dynamic, conversational setting, where ideas were casually exchanged. Google has been the web’s library: archival, organized and oriented around research. Twitter and Facebook, on the other hand, are cof... (more)

Technology Review: Google Grabs More Geo-Data

published 289 days, 13 hours, 59 minutes ago posted by DonDeaDonDea 293 days, 7 hours, 28 minutes ago
Monday, May 25, 2009 11:49:49 PM GMT Friday, May 22, 2009 6:20:36 AM GMT
On Wednesday, Google announced that it would open its servers to geographic data belonging to anyone. This means that developers will be able to quickly build a location-based Web service without having to also manage their own data server. The announcement might be good for many developers, but it's also good for Google itself: the location data will be integrated into Google's search index, making it searchable and, ultimately, capable of generating advertising revenue. ...One increasing concern, however... NYTimes:Home - Site Index - Archive - Help When Audrey Spangenberg idly typed “FirePond,” the name of her small software company, into Google this year, she was not happy with what she saw. Her company’s site came up as the top search listing. But just above it, Google showed the ads of competitors that had paid Google to display their marketing messages whenever someone searched for FirePond, a registered trademark. “I was furious,” said Ms. Spangenberg, chief executive of FPX, which does business as Fir... Google improves Blog Search, but not by much - NYTimes.com

Google Blog Search just got a few upgrades — it apparently wants to become more like algorithm-driven news aggregator Techmeme, before that site let in the humans. Specifically, Blog Search has added more items to its “clusters” of stories about a particular topic, as Jeremy Hylton, Google’s head of search quality in New York, details to Search Engine Land. Now it’s trying to feature “the freshest and most authoritative blog content” using “a lot of signals…. [S]o the post that breaks a story and gets a lot... (more)

Google’s changes to provide users to use longer search strings and get more detailed search results will likely cause marketers, Web publishers and IT sellers to change their online search strategies. Today, Google showed off a forthcoming service called Google Squared that creates tables of numerical data culled from searches of websites. In the example given, a search for "small dogs" created a table on different breeds, including data on such things as the breeds' heights and weights, placed inside boxes. Once an initial table is created, users can click on individual entries to check the source and--if the number is erroneous--correct the numbers through new searches. Finally, they can save their cus... (more)

That's news to us. Everything these days is about Twitter, though. Go to a party--talk about Twitter. Have a blog? Talk about Twitter. Use Twitter? Talk about Twitter. Apparently we can add to... he biggest question still remaining? Facebook. Buchheit on Facebook: "Facebook is still very much a closed world of its own. That's sometimes useful, but other times I want the ability to interact with the outside world and also other systems. For example, if I post something on FriendFeed about a product that I'm using, often someone working on that product (or very knowledgeable about it) will join in on the conversation. That kind of thing can't happen on Facebook. [Because cross-site search is limited ... (more)
